Before You Choose a Real Estate Course: Why Your Choice of Training Provider Matters

Recent action in June by Australia’s national training regulator is a timely reminder that when it comes to your real estate qualification, quality matters.

If you’re considering a real estate course, you’ve probably noticed significant differences in pricing, delivery models and course duration.

Some providers advertise heavily discounted pricing. Others promise exceptionally fast completion times.

While those offers can be appealing, recent regulatory activity within Australia’s vocational education and training (VET) sector highlights why choosing a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) is about far more than finding the cheapest or fastest option.

It’s about protecting your qualification, your professional reputation and your future career.

A Timely Reminder for the Real Estate Industry

In June 2026, the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) commenced action to cancel qualifications issued by another Registered Training Organisation following serious findings relating to training delivery, assessment practices and qualification integrity.

Among the qualifications under review were the CPP41419 Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice and CPP51122 Diploma of Property (Agency Management); qualifications that underpin the careers of thousands of real estate professionals across Australia.

Importantly, many of the affected students believed they had enrolled with a legitimate provider and had no reason to suspect there were issues behind the scenes. While this action relates to one provider, it highlights a much broader message for anyone considering a real estate qualification.

Choosing an RTO isn’t simply a purchasing decision; it’s a career decision.

The VET Sector Is Under Greater Scrutiny

Australia’s vocational education sector is currently experiencing increased regulatory scrutiny. ASQA has identified qualification integrity as one of its key regulatory priorities and continues to take action against providers where serious concerns are identified.

Current focus areas include:

  • Qualification integrity

  • Shortened course durations

  • Inadequate or fraudulent Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

  • Academic integrity

  • Non-genuine and bad-faith providers

  • Student protection

The purpose of these actions isn’t to make qualifications harder to achieve. It’s to ensure nationally recognised qualifications continue to maintain their value for students, employers and the wider community.

Why Does This Matter to Students?

When ASQA identifies serious non-compliance, the consequences can extend well beyond the training provider itself.  In some cases, ASQA has commenced processes to review or cancel qualifications issued by providers where investigations found appropriate training and assessment may not have occurred.

For affected students, this can result in:

  • Uncertainty about the status of their qualification.

  • Requests to provide evidence of completed training and assessment.

  • Potential reassessment or additional study.

  • Delays to licensing or career progression.

  • Additional financial costs.

  • Significant stress and disruption.

These situations remain relatively uncommon, but they reinforce an important point:

The provider you choose today could have an impact on your career long after you’ve completed your qualification.

Fast Doesn’t Always Mean Better

When comparing providers, it’s natural to ask:

“How quickly can I finish?”

But perhaps the more important question is:

“How well prepared will I be when I do?”

A nationally recognised qualification is more than a certificate. It’s the foundation of your professional capability. Whether you’re conducting an appraisal, negotiating a sale, managing a tenancy or advising a client, you’ll rely on the knowledge, judgement and confidence developed throughout your training.

Quality education isn’t simply about completing assessments quickly. It’s about developing practical skills you’ll use every day throughout your career.

Choosing an RTO Is More Than a Price Comparison

Price will always be an important consideration. However, it shouldn’t be the only one. Before enrolling in any real estate qualification, consider asking:

  • Who will be delivering my training?

  • Do the trainers have genuine industry experience?

  • How will my competency be assessed?

  • What level of support will I receive throughout the course?

  • Does the provider have a strong reputation within the industry?

  • Will I leave with practical skills I can confidently apply in the workplace?

  • Is this a provider that genuinely invests in long-term student success?

The answers to these questions often tell you far more than the course price alone.

Why Under the Hammer Takes a Different Approach

At Under the Hammer, we’ve deliberately chosen not to compete on being the cheapest provider or the fastest provider. Instead, we’ve built our reputation on delivering practical, high-quality education that prepares students for long-term success in the real estate industry.

Our philosophy is simple. A qualification should do more than help someone become licensed. It should help them become capable.

That’s why our students learn from experienced real estate professionals who have worked in the industry and understand the challenges they’ll face every day.

Our approach focuses on:

  • Practical training based on real-world scenarios.

  • Robust assessment that demonstrates genuine competency.

  • Experienced trainers with extensive industry backgrounds.

  • Personalised support throughout the learning journey.

  • Ongoing opportunities for career development through additional qualifications, Auctioneer Accreditation, CPD and professional development.

Many of our students return to Under the Hammer several times throughout their careers; progressing from Assistant Agent to Class 2, Class 1, Auctioneer Accreditation and beyond.

We don’t see ourselves as simply issuing qualifications. We see ourselves as supporting careers.

Five Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Training Provider

Before enrolling in any real estate course, ask yourself:

✔ Who are the trainers, and what real-world experience do they bring?

✔ How will I demonstrate competency throughout the course?

✔ What support is available if I need help?

✔ Will I develop practical skills I’ll use every day in the industry?

✔ Is this a provider I can trust throughout my career; not just until I receive my certificate?

If you can’t confidently answer those questions, it’s worth asking a few more before making your decision.

The Bottom Line

A real estate qualification isn’t simply about becoming licensed. It’s about building the foundation of your professional career. While price and convenience will always influence purchasing decisions, they shouldn’t come at the expense of quality education, practical capability or confidence in the qualification you’ve earned.

At Under the Hammer, we’re committed to helping our students become more than qualified. We’re committed to helping them become capable, confident and successful real estate professionals. Because when you’re investing in your future, it’s worth choosing a training provider that’s committed to your success long after you’ve completed your course.

Thinking About Your Next Qualification?

Whether you’re taking your first step into the industry or looking to progress to your next qualification, our team is always happy to have a conversation. We’ll help you understand your options, identify the right pathway for your career goals and answer any questions you have about studying with Under the Hammer.

Because choosing a qualification isn’t just about where you study. It’s about who you choose to support your career.
